learning from the collective knowledge of this forum, just HOW you've
successfully negotiated an employment contract. I'm not focused on fair pay
issues nor feelings of disposability, no victim complex here ...I just want
to know HOW YOU GOT the contract ;)
All experiences with happy endings are welcome! Actually, even if you gave
it your best shot and it didn't work out, I'd still like to hear about it
and learn from you so that maybe I can be successful at it too :)
Thanks,
Nadine Turner, Six Sigma Black Belt

Nadine,
There are always horror stories and I have seen many.
However, being an at-will employee also holds many
advantages to the employee, especially in California.
You can walk at any time with no need to give notice,
you can be doing side jobs at will because your
employer has no hold over you. You can always be
searching for the better position because you are not
locked up. The only way an employer can try to get
around much of this is through an employee handbook,
but most, especially the smaller companies, rarely
have them and if they do they are boiler plate and
difficult to enforce.
I am sure it is different at larger companies, but I
don't feel you will get fair compensation at bigger
enterprises anyway, so if they are going to treat you
as disposable, treat them the same way. That said,
since my insurance agency does business with both your
current and past employers, I recognize that there are
many people vastly underpaid at your place of
employment who are just too scared to go out and get
paid what they are truly worth.
I would be interested, either on line or offline, to
hear your opinion on my comments. Oh, and by the way,
i work with very entrepreneurial clientele and one of
the top priorities is usually to lock in the best
employees not only with an employment contract but
also with benefit packages which make it desirable to
stick around and produce results. A business will
never be better than the people they have working for
them.
Cheers,
Larry Steinberg
