We are blessed to have experience this unfortunate event having people like you close by, as we embrace the many lessons learned and shift our lives to make room for change we look forward to the challenge of battling "My friend's tumor".

After 2 colonoscopies, ct scans, body scan, mri, 2 oncologist consultations, internet research and much appreciated advice, we finally got a start on our "plan of attack" (all within a week!!!)

Soon My Friend will be receiving chemotherapy concurrent with radiation for a period of 5 weeks. Another 5 weeks will pass to recover, heal and prepare him for surgery (around February). After that a final round of chemo. The following 7 years he will be tested and carefully screened.

 

One of the most important things I learned from this experience, and one I feel is imperative to share, is that if proven to be hereditary our children will be able to be alert for symptoms and early screening. 

Until yesterday I ignored that:

For high risk individuals with a family history of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), doctors at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center recommend annual sigmoidoscopy beginning between the ages of 10 and 15 or earlier if symptoms develop.

For high risk individuals with a first-degree family member (parent or sibling) who had a cancer or a premalignant (adenomatous) polyp before the age of 60, doctors recommend colonoscopy at least every five years beginning either at age 40 or ten years before the youngest age of the family-member's diagnosis (of either colon cancer of premalignant polyps).

Today I learned that My friend's biopsy can be tested for genetic mutation. I learned that he could save his children's life... then again, he could save ours if we take his experience and go get a colonoscopy at the slightest symptom. And if your doctor says that your are to young for that, get another doctor.

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you, I don't have words that can express how much I appreciate all the support.
