Since you said you are looking for a potential career change you may
want to start laying the groundwork now. Network at every opportunity
and make sure people know about your situation. So when friends ask how
you are doing, tell them you're getting ready to take a separation
package and launch a new career. Build up your LI network. Try and get
informational interviews with people in the companies in which you are
interested. You may be able to make contacts with hiring managers or
people who will let you know when a job gets posted on the internal job
board. You can do all this well in advance of your end date. You may
also be able to eliminate some target companies after talking to a few
people who work there - serial layoffs, bad culture match, expectation
to work 70+ hours/week, not family or work/life balance friendly, etc.
Then you can be a lot more focused say 60 days out before your end date
and hit the ground running. I have friends who did this and had a job
within 2 weeks after their end date.
